What Is The Best Gaming TV?

You're thinking of buying a new TV and want to get the best one for game playing? So which is the best for gaming? LCD, Plasma, or LED?

For gaming, the display is everything, you want the best you can afford. A good gaming tv needs to be fast and feature rich. With the wide array of of HDTVs available and all offering different features, it's no wonder consumers get confused.

Lets take a look at advantages and disadvantages of each type of TV from a gamers standpoint shall we, and try to pick the best TV to suit your needs and budget.

Understanding HDTV Features Most Important To Gamers

The features of flat-screen TVs are many, varied, and confusing. Let's try to shed some light on some of those features, at least the features most important to a gamer buying a gaming TV.

To choose the best gaming TV, look at these features:

Refresh Rate - The refresh rate is simply the number of times per second the image on the screen updates, or refreshes. Most TVs on the market offer 60Hz (60 frames or refreshes per second) than up to 120Hz, 240Hz, and even as fast as 400Hz refresh rate. If you play fast paced games with a lot going on you would want the higher Hz rating.

Input Lag - You want a quick response time for gaming. Look for the set with a very low lag time...faster is better!

Resolution - The higher the resolution the better the clarity. Higher clarity will give sharper images, and this is more important especially as the screens get bigger.

Video Inputs - The connections you use between your console and the TV makes all the difference in the clarity of the images you see on the screen. The PS3 is best hooked up with it's built-in HDMI, while the 360 can be connected via the HDMI or by using component video cables. The Wii connects using either component or composite cables. I would look for a TV that has at least 3 or 4 HDMI hook-ups (having an extra one isn't a bad idea;o)

Contrast - The contrast ratio is the level of granularity seen on-screen in differing light. Generally, if the TV is to be viewed in an open brightly lit room you would benefit from a higher contrast, whereas in a darker room a lower contrast would be suitable.

Color - Plasma TVs have much more vivid colors and crisper images than LCD, or LEDs.

Screen-Burn-In - Plasma TVs are susceptible to burn-in, which can occur when a static image is left too long on-screen which can "burn" a dark shadow of the image onto the screen. This is not as much of an issue with the newer technology, but still something to keep in mind.

Screen Glare - Plasma TVs tend to have glare, or refections on-screen in bright light, where the LCDs and LEDs are less reflective.

Viewing Angle - LCD TVs tend to get darker the sharper the viewing angle, while Plasma TVs have a wider viewing range. If you play games with a group of friends you may want a Plasma TV instead of a LCD, or LED.

Energy Consumption - LCD and LED TVs run cooler and use less energy than the Plasma TVs do.

Thanks for your comment Kalland. What can I say...I just like the big ones!

I've included 5 Flat-screen TVs under 37 inches just for you! Well, Ok, and anyone else that's interested.

Have a good one Kalland, and I hope your games really "kick" on your new flat-screen!

I noticed that the Tv's you listed as the best for gaming are very big (with the exception of one). What LED Tv's under 37 inches would you recommend?

Btw, thanks for the information. I'll start taking all this into consideration when buying myself a new Tv.
