Differences Between LED, LCD, And Plasma TVs

Plasma TVs

The display of a plasma TV is made up of millions of plasma cells, which create the images you see on the TV.

Plasma TVs offer larger screen sizes than LCD TVs. You can get 30 inch, 42 inch, 50 inch, and even 63 inch plasma TVs. The LCDs are limited to up to a 40 inch model. There are even TVs larger than the 63 inch model becoming available. I expect LCD TVs to catch up in the future though.

Advantages of Plasma TVs:

  • Plasma TVs are available in larger screen sizes.
  • Plasma has better black levels, as well as a better contrast ratio.
  • Plasma TVs can be viewed from a wide viewing angle of between 160 to 180 degrees.
  • Plasma TVs have the fastest refreshing rate and will capture every detail in a fast action scene.
  • Plasma TV screens will display billions of colors, producing smooth lifelike gradations of shades, enhancing the picture quality, and making the images very realistic.

Disadvantages of Plasma TVs:

  • Plasma TVs will not perform as well at higher altitudes.
  • Plasma TVs are more susceptible to a "burn-in" of static images.
  • Plasma TVS are much heavier than LCD TVs.
  • Plasma TVs can produce a glare in a brightly lit room although some advancements have been made to correct this.

LCD TVs

LCD TVs or Liquid Crystal Display Screens are also used in computer monitors, cell phones, and even camera screens. The LCD screens were first used for computer screens, and now that the technology is being used for TV screens they are the choice of serious gamers. Some game players still prefer the vivid colors, and chrispness of the plasma display though.

LCD displays work by a liquid crystal solution being sandwiched between to polarized pieces of glass. When an electrical voltage is applied the crystals move, and this movement is what causes an image to appear. The LCD display panels do not produce the light themselves, it just filters the back-light to create the display image.

Advantages of a LCD TVs:

  • LCD TVs last longer than a plasma TV. Some have been know to be in service for 30 years!
  • LCD Tvs have a lower power consumption than a plasma, but a little higher than a LED TV.
  • The LCD TVs are available in many sizes, up to 40 inches (larger sizes will soon be available.)

Disadvantages of a LCD TVs:

  • LCD TVs have a poor contrast level and will respond slower to fast moving images, creating a blur.
  • LCD TVs are higher priced than the Plasma TVs, but because of the high demand and increased production the prices are gradually falling.

LED TVs

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. It is an electronic component which emits light when a certain voltage is applied to it. Though the TV using this technology is call a "LED TV", the LED light source is actually used as the TV's backlight, and the TV screen is actually a LCD screen. Though some of the current TV models use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps, or CCFL the LED type of backlighting still remains the best TV backlight system.

Advantages of LED TVs:

  • LED TVs have a far better dynamic contrast level than LCD Tvs, because of it's superior backlighting system.
  • LED TVs are very thin some are only an inch in thickness.
  • LED TVs use less power.
  • LED TVs are considered to be most reliable.

Disadvantages of the LED TVs:

  • LED TVs are higher priced than LCD TVs, but prices should come down because of increased demand and increased production.
